Waterproofing Polyblock Townhouses with a Combined Solution

Thane Mews, Wellington

SUMMARY

Waterproofing was necessary for the refurbishment of these Seven Terraced Town Houses at Thane Mews, Wellington. These houses are recessed into the hillside, this unintentionally acts as a dam, obstructing the natural flow of underground and groundwater. This resulted in the pooling of water, which eventually seeped into the buildings through weak points in the structure.

The houses are constructed using PolyBlocks, a material that requires comprehensive waterproofing measures on both its outer and inner surfaces.

THE PROJECT

Approved installer Riteway Waterproofing and notable Architect Resolve It Architecture Wellington worked with Newton Systems designers to design a tailor-made waterproofing system that complimented the building's structure, its location, and its intended purpose.

THE SPECIFICATION

Riteway Waterproofing began by excavating the soil holding the recessed sides of the building against the hill. They applied a Type A tanking system to these outer walls as the initial defence against water. Given the specific application and the building's PolyBlocks substrate, Newton Systems recommended using the Newton System 500 as the ultimate internal waterproofing solution.

Newton System 500, our Cavity Drain Membrane System was applied with Newton Multiplugs and Newton Waterproof Tape to the walls and floors. As the structure is located on a steep hill then the designers could utilise the existing slope to drain any water ingress naturally.

A void was then formed within the floor and walls. Each penetration to the system was meticulously and accurately waterproofed to maintain the integrity of the waterproofing system.

THE RESULT

The below ground waterproofing for this project was successfully completed within the designated timeframe and budget. Thane Mews is now a distinctive and high-end complex comprising seven townhouses. This boutique and gated community showcases the harmonious integration of innovative waterproofing solutions and architectural excellence, reflecting the collaborative efforts of Newton Systems, Riteway Waterproofing, and Resolve It Architecture Wellington.

Waterproofing a medium like polyblock requires a high level of expertise and great installation. A bespoke, combined solution should always be designed. Riteway Waterproofing are exceptional installers and this project is a testament to the importance of our partnership.
