Waterproof a leaking basement to create a family recreation room on the North Shore

SUMMARY
Located in the North Shore suburb of Birkenhead, the 1970's construction of block walls on slab was ground-bearing to full height on 3 sides. Newton Specialist Contractor Waterproofing Solutions were brought onto this residential project to waterproof a severely leaking and therefore unusable 60m2 basement. The existing basement required repairs to old inground spa area and the space would get ankle deep in water during heavy rain.
THE PROJECT
Excavation to access the exterior walls was impossible, so an internal solution was required. The owners had exhausted all possible avenues and had given up on ever using the space, until they were offered Newton System 500 by Waterproofing Solutions Ltd
THE SPECIFICATION
Ensuring that the project was fully compliant with Building Code Clause E2 which requires buildings to provide adequate resistance to penetration by, and accumulation of, moisture from the outside; Waterproofing Solutions recommended a Newton System 500 - internal cavity drain membrane system.
To start, faults and deficiencies in the wall and slab were repaired, then the wall were secured with Newton 508 membrane. Newton Basedrain was then fitted to the perimeter, with gravity drainage to the exterior stormwater system. The floor was infilled with XPS board and a Newton 508 membrane laid across the floor, thus fully sealed of the area. Taking advantage of Newton System 500’s major advantage over hydrostatic coating option , the builder then laid a laminate floor system and battened and lined the walls – importantly only the Newton System 500 with it’s unique ‘Multiplug’ fixing system allows this level of freedom and choice when relining
